# Business Broadband Grants UK 2026

The Government committed billions to reaching rural properties with broadband. Which schemes are open right now? Which ones apply to your business?

Guides · 27 Feb 2026

The Government committed billions to reaching rural properties with broadband. The money is flowing. But which schemes are open right now? Which ones apply to your business?

Here's the complete breakdown of what's available in 2026.

Don't wait 12–24 months for grant-funded fibre — see what we can install in 10 working days.

## National Broadband Programme (Openreach)

This is the biggest government-backed programme. Openreach is the primary contractor.

**What it covers:** Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) or full fibre (FTTP) where commercial ISPs won't reach.

**Funding:** Government funds 90%. Premises pay nothing upfront (sometimes optional co-investment, but typically free).

**Status (2026):** Rolling out across rural England, Scotland, Wales, and NI through 2026-2027.

**Timeline:** If Openreach schedules work at your location, fibre typically arrives 12-24 months from approval.

**How to check:** Go to **Thinkbroadband.com**. Enter your postcode. It will tell you if your property is in the National Broadband Programme rollout area and estimated installation date.

**Critical issue:** Most rural properties already know they're NOT in the National Broadband area. Otherwise, they wouldn't be looking for alternatives. If it says "scheduled 2027," that's probably too far away.

## Superfast Broadband Programme (Closed)

This scheme ran through 2020. It's finished. Don't apply — they're not accepting new applicants.

## Business Broadband Vouchers (Mostly Closed)

The Government's business broadband grant scheme offered up to £3,000 per business for broadband upgrades.

**Status (2026):** The original scheme closed to new applications in 2021. However, some local authorities still have residual funds.

**Check:** Contact your local council's business development team. Ask if any broadband voucher schemes are still active in your area.

**Common answer:** No. But worth checking.

## Gigabit-Capable Grants (For Businesses)

More recent government funding targets "gigabit-capable" broadband for business districts.

**What qualifies:** Businesses needing 1Gbps and above speeds for operations like data centres, digital agencies, video production, or tech hubs.

**Funding:** Varies by region. Some councils have budgets up to £10k per business.

**Status (2026):** Available in selected areas. Check your local combined authority's digital infrastructure plan.

**How to find it:** Contact your county council or unitary authority's broadband/digital team. They'll tell you if your area is eligible.

## Subsidy Control Act Alert (Critical)

As of 2024, new government grants fall under the **Subsidy Control Act** (post-Brexit). This means:

- Grants are scrutinized for "state aid"
- Businesses can't claim multiple grants for the same installation
- Some grant schemes pause and restart as they're re-aligned

**Translation:** If you're applying for a government grant in 2026, check that the scheme is active and hasn't been paused.

## Regional Schemes to Check

Several regions have their own broadband funding:

### Defra Farming Programmes (Agriculture Only)

- English and Welsh farming grants sometimes include broadband
- Check your local Defra office

### Levelling Up Funds

- £4.8bn government fund for regional development
- Some allocated to broadband in priority areas
- Check your local authority's levelling-up bid — broadband might be included

## What These Grants Usually Cover

### What they DO cover:

- Fibre installation (cabinet to premises)
- Leased line installation
- In some cases, satellite dishes (less common)

### What they DON'T cover:

- Monthly subscriptions
- Router or equipment costs (usually)
- 4G/5G installations
- Maintenance or upgrades

## Why 4G/5G Rarely Qualifies for Grants

Government grants prioritize fixed infrastructure (fibre, leased lines) because they're permanent assets. Cellular solutions are seen as temporary.

This is a policy gap: cellular [SD-WAN](/integra-sd-wan) can work for 10 or more years reliably, but it's not grant-eligible.

## Real Talk: Why Grants Aren't Your Answer

Here's the hard truth: By the time you apply, are approved, and installation is scheduled, your property waits 12-24 months minimum.

Most businesses can't wait that long.

**The alternative:** Use a private ISP like Integra. We install in 10 working days. Cellular or Starlink-based solutions don't require grants because they cost less and deploy faster.

With a private cellular solution (Integra Pro), you're online immediately instead of waiting 2 years. A grant might save on installation fees, but the time value of immediate connectivity often outweighs the savings.

## If You Want to Pursue Grants

1. **Check if you're in a grant-eligible area.** Use Thinkbroadband.com to see if your property qualifies for National Broadband Programme.
2. **Contact your local authority.** Call the council's broadband officer and ask about regional schemes.
3. **Be realistic about timelines.** Even if you qualify, budget 12-24 months for installation.
4. **Have a backup plan.** While waiting for grant approval, consider a private ISP for immediate connectivity.

## The Integra Position

We don't apply for grants on behalf of customers. We can't — Integra's cellular and satellite solutions don't typically qualify.

But we're often faster and cheaper than waiting for grant-funded fibre.

If you've been waiting for BT's grant-funded installation date and it keeps slipping, let's talk. We might have you online while you're waiting.
